World's Largest Commercial Satellite Launched to Space

PARIS - The largest commercial satellite ever built - the massive TerreStar-1 - launched into space on Wednesday, riding a European-built rocket into orbit.

Weighing in at 15,233 pounds (6,910 kg), TerreStar-1 lifted off atop an Ariane 5 ECA rocket at 1:52 p.m. EDT (1752 GMT) from the Guiana Space Center in French Guiana.

The launch was the third of seven Ariane 5 ECA launches planned for 2009 by the European launch firm Arianespace. Because of its size, TerreStar-1 was the sole payload onboard the vehicle, which is typically used to place two telecommunications satellites at a time into geostationary transfer orbit.

In addition to its mass, TerreStar-1 is distinguished by a giant, 60-foot (18-meter) wide S-band antenna that will be unfurled in the coming weeks. Once the satellite's two solar wings are deployed, TerreStar-1 is expected to have a wingspan of about 106 feet (32.4 meters). The satellite and its S-band antenna are expected to be put through several months of ground tests before entering commercial service toward the end of the year, according to its owners, the Reston, Va.-based TerreStar Networks Inc.

TerreStar-1 was built by the California-based Space Systems/Loral. It is designed to provide mobile voice and data communications in North America to smartphone-size handsets using the 2-gigahertz, or S-band, portion of the radio spectrum. The system is designed to function with a network of ground-based signal amplifiers to permit service in areas the satellite cannot reach, such as urban canyons and areas outside the line-of-sight view of the spacecraft.

With its satellite now launched, TerreStar faces some of the same challenges that ICO Global, also of Reston, faced following the launch of its S-band mobile communications satellite in mid-2008: How to secure the remaining investment needed to deploy the network of ground repeaters, called the Ancillary Terrestrial Component, which are crucial to making the service work. It is an investment likely to total at least several hundred million dollars. ICO has since filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection as it seeks to reorganize its debt.

"Today's launch is just the beginning of the TerreStar story," said TerreStar President, Jeff Epstein, in a statement. "We believe there are tremendous opportunities ahead - in both the commercial and government sectors - and we remain focused on our promise to help solve the critical communications and business continuity challenges faced by government, emergency responders, enterprises and rural communities."

A black hole more than 500 times the mass of the Sun

Astronomers on Wednesday said they had identified an intermediate class of black hole that could explain how supermassive, light-sucking monsters develop in the heart of galaxies.

Their find -- a black hole more than 500 times the mass of the Sun, on the fringe of galaxy ESO 243-249 -- is reported in the latest issue of Nature, the British-based science journal.

In terms of size, it lies between supermassive black holes, which can be billions of times the mass of the Sun, and relative tiddlers, which are between three and 20 solar masses.

Black holes are among the most powerful forces in the Universe. They are concentrated fields of gravity which are so powerful that nothing, not even light, can escape them.

Stellar-mass black holes are believed to have been created from the death throes of massive stars.

But there is less consensus over how supermassive black holes, which lurk in the centre of galaxies, including the Milky Way, are formed.

"One theory is supermassive black holes may be formed by the merger of a number of intermediate-mass black holes," said lead author Sean Farrell, an astrophysicist at Britain's University of Leicester.

"To ratify such a theory, however, you must first prove the existence of intermediate black holes."

As black holes do not emit light, the existence and size of the intermediate black hole was detected thanks to its "ultra-luminous" X-ray emissions, spotted by Europe's XMM-Newton orbital telescope.

“Who cares?” I hear you say, “Just use Firefox”

Well, wherever your browser allegiances lie, IE8 is still a very important release and developers have to know what to expect from this new browser.

The current IE beta is pretty unstable, almost unusable so I wouldn’t really recommend giving it a spin just for interest’s sake. The following guide is what you can expect from the final version.

Whilst researching this I was surprised about the number of changes being made with the next Internet Explorer. I guess I’ve become accustomed to the incremental releases from most developers, or perhaps the Firefox 3 release which essentially brought very little new to the browser… just greatly improved existing performance and enhanced functionality.

Actually, before I do, here is an image of a mock-up for IE using the new Office Ribbon interface. This has been discarded, but it’s interesting to see ideas the developers have been playing around with:

User Interface

I don’t know how well this would have worked, but I think I’m glad it was rejected. Great though the ribbon is for applications like MS Office, for browsing small and sleak is much much better.

So in beta 1 you won’t find many changes in the UI, but you can expect a few more to appear for the final release, the idea was to keep navigation and toolbars as ‘thin’ as possible vertically; somewhere around the 120 pixels mark.

Additionally the menus and interface will be a little more customisable, readjustments of existing tools for better exposure and a dedicated Firefox style addons interface.

Standards

There can be nothing more frustrating to a web developer then cross-browser support. I’m not going to go into detail on the so-called “browser wars”or the patchy standards support of Internet Explorer. You know all this, if you don’t then Wikipedia is a great place to start.

Internet Explorer 8 is Microsoft’s first real attempt for complete standards support. This could of course cause huge issues with pages coded for IE6 and 7, so Microsoft has made it possible for web developers to place a meta tag on their site, so a IE8 browser displays the site in IE7 mode.

This is the single most important change in IE8, and one you will probably not even notice if you’re not a developer. Expect some uproar across the web as webpages are broken, but with time it’ll settle down.

In parallel with the CSS 2.1 implementation in the upcoming beta, the IE Test team has been developing test cases against the CSS 2.1 specification. Today we’re happy to announce that we’ve submitted an additional 2524 more test cases to the W3C for inclusion into the CSS 2.1 test suite. This brings the test suite much closer to the necessary breadth needed to ensure that web sites will interoperate. These tests are available on the IE Development Forum until they are fully reviewed by the working group and accepted into the official test suite.

Security

A bit less interesting, but even more important is the security changes. Internet Explorer 7 was a major step in terms of security, and IE8 continues that even more so. Key security changes include:

SmartScreen Filter
Essentially the improved Phishing filter of IE7.

Domain Highlighting
Malicious websites often use long domain names to confuse people into thinking they are on a different website. Domain highlighting exposes the domain name, and if IE detects the site is unsafe, turns the whole address bar red to bring a your attention to the fact.

More Secure ActiveX Controls
Further changes have been made to ActiveX to prevent malware being loaded onto a users computer. Even if it is installed by a user it be prevented from installation. Exceptions have been built in for trusted controls such as Microsoft, Adobe and Apple. Data Execution Prevention has also been turned on by default in IE8.

Activities:

Activities are Microsoft’s answer to Firefox’s extensions, although IE can also run extensions. Paul Thurrott explains exactly what these activities features are:

Activities… provide contextual menus on Web pages that can provide additional information via Web services that will lead readers to new locations. The contents of these contextual menus are determined by what’s selected on the page and which Activities are available in the user’s browser. Put another way, the functionality is not provided by the underlying Web site at all. It is instead provided by the browser via this new feature.

On one level, Activities are interesting and useful, as we’ll see in a moment. However, they also allow users to completely bypass whatever facilities the Web site itself has provided. So, for example, you might use the IE 8 Activities feature to find a Yahoo! Map for a selected address on a Web page. But that page may supply its own map, one that you have now chosen to bypass. My suspicion is that this feature will cause the same consternation among Web developers that Smart Tags did seven years ago. What may offset these complaints is that many Activities are now created by Microsoft’s competitors, and many more are sure to come in the days ahead; with Smart Tags, the default tags were all Microsoft-specific, raising privacy and exclusivity concerns.

WebSlices:

Interestingly Webslices where a technology intended for Internet Explorer all the way back in 1996–7. Web Slices are part-widget, part RSS feed. Personally I don’t find it a particularly exciting addition to IE, but it may be different in practice.

Essentially you can take a ‘screenshot’ of a page which then updates dynamically and can be viewed without loading up the whole site again.

Developer Tools and Changes

Aside from standards compatibility IE8 also includes developer tools right into the browser like Firefox does. It has also improved Ajax support, meaning that the navigation buttons can be used be Rich Internet Applications (RIAs) to go to the previous task without navigating back to the previous page.

There are also a lot of general performance improvements.

Add IE8 as part of IT’s Windows Vista image;
Use Group Policy to control how IE8 renders older Web sites;
Improve crash resilience for quicker recovery and minimal disruption; and
Manage and deploy customized versions of IE8 with an enhanced Internet Explorer Administration Kit (IEAK).

As you may have noticed, this release of IE is targeted at developers first and foremost. It’s the browser they’ve been waiting for for years, with full CSS support, accurate HTML reading and standards compatibility.

Many of these changes are not going to be noticed by end users, but they will impact significantly on their experience browsing the web. Hopefully they will be safer, more secure, stability and

performing significantly faster.

Manage add ons in Internet Explorer

It may come as a surprise, but Internet Explorer also had add ons, just like Firefox. There are, of course, thousands more add ons for Firefox than for IE, but they still exist! You can enable, disable, add or delete add ons in IE by using the Manage add ons dialog box.

I’ll explain how to get to the manage add ons screen in IE and also point out how you can start IE without any add ons in case there is one that is causing IE to constantly crash or not load at all.

First open IE, click on the Tools menu item and then choose Internet Options. In IE 7, you may have to press the ALT key to see the menu items.

Now click on the Programs tab and you should see a Manage add-ons button at the very bottom.

You’ll now see a list of all the add-ons that have been used by Internet Explorer and their current status, enabled or disabled.

If you want to disable an add-on, just select it from the list and choose disable at the bottom.

You’ll also see at the bottom a link to download more add ons for Internet Explorer. You can just check out the IEAddOns site to download new ones like PicLens, which is a cool plugin I had written about earlier.

Finally, if you can’t even open Internet Explorer because of some conflict with an add-on, you can start IE without any add-ons. Here’s how to do it. Simple right-click on the IE icon on your desktop and choose Start without add-ons.

Pretty simple! So hopefully, if you are having any issues with your IE add-ons, you can either disable or delete them using the above steps. Enjoy!

Scan Websites for For Spyware | Viruses | Potential Threats

Today I searched my own blog address in Google to view websites which have linked to it. To my surprise, from the result pages I found someone has scanned my site with McAfee SiteAdvisor

for potential spyware or other potentially unwanted programs, not quite the search result I expected I’d say.

The security report stated that mine was safe from threats though there are annoyances reported which cannot be avoided when you have ads in your blog.

So out of curiousity I checked out other website scanning report, such as download.com we all visit. Oddly, there are some programs offered to be download at download.com reported to contain viruses and spyware which were detected by the site advisor. Wow! software downloads at download.com are not safe?

The similar result received by softpedia.com which claim to be free from threats for their software downloads.

A Softpedia staff replied to the matter by stating that they cannot control software developers who updated their listing by not informing them the changes of their software.

A commenter replied to the issue suggesting people to scan for the software developer homepage instead to detect for potential threats before downloading the software they desire. A smart move indeed!

Connect Two Laptops Using WiFi

This is step by step tutorial on how you can connect two laptops using WiFi (or two desktop computers with WiFi devices). This type of network is known as peer to peer network and is useful for file sharing and using same internet connection on both systems. So as told earlier you should have two laptops with WiFi or desktops with WiFi devices to make this connection.

Connecting Two Computers Using WiFi

Let’s name both laptops as PC1 and PC2. Now we need to set names and workgroups of both computers (Remember both computers will have same workgroups). To set the name and workgroup of both computers right click on My Computer and select Properties. Click the tab which says Computer Name and change names of computers as you like (Here we will set computer names PC1 and PC2) and also change the Workgroup option as you like (but this Workgroup should be same for both computers).

Now you need to make “Wireless Network Connection” in PC1. Right click on Wireless Network icon for this and click on option “View Available Wireless Network”.

Now click on option “Change Advance Settings”.

Now a windows “Wireless Internet Connection Properties” will open. Click on the tab which says “Wireless Network” and then click Add button. Now write a name in Network Name field. You can also set a password here if you like and also remember to check the option “This is computer to computer network”. Now press OK and “wireless network properties” will be closed.

Now in next step, you need to provide IP for network in “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)”. For this, right click on “Wireless Internet Connection” and go in Properties and click Internet Protocols and then click Properties. Here For example.

PC1 = IP Address: 192.168.1.1 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
PC2 = IP Address: 192.168.1.2 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

And Default Gateway as 192.168.1.1 (same as IP address of PC1). Having done this all, you can connect both computers using WiFi.

File Sharing Between Both Computers

Now for file sharing Enable the Sharing of “Shared Folder” in both computers. So to go in other computer, write IP address of that computer in address bar of first computer and press Enter (in this case write \\192.168.1.1 and press Enter). This will open other computer’s sharing folder where you can share file, delete files or rename them (make sure to allow these actions from other computer).

Wireless Internet Sharing Between Both Computers

It is very easy to do when you have followed above procedure. Right click on “Internet Connections” on one computer (which has internet connection in it) and go in Properties and click on Sharing and check the option which says “Allow other network users to connect through this computer” and select “Wireless Internet Connection” in “Home Network Connection”. If you want you can also check “Establish Dialup Connection” and “Allow Other Network” .

That is it. You have connected both computers using WiFi and now you can share files, play games and chat on this network.

Hide and Lock Folders With Password In Windows

Download this notepad file or copy following code in a notepad file.

Write the password by replacing the text “type your password here”.
Save this file as XYZ.bat (Try this if you do not know how to change extension of a website).
Close the file and double click XYZ.bat
It will create a new folder called “Locker” automatically. This folder will be in same folder as the original XYZ.bat file.
Place the content inside Locker folder and double click XYZ.bat. It will ask you if you want to lock, say ‘Y’ and your folder will disappear.
To view folder again double click XYZ.bat and enter the password (The same password that you wrote in code file).

This is easy tip to hide and lock your private folders that you do not want to share other users of same computers. The folder will be invisible to other users and even if they click your XYZ.bat file, they will have to provide password to access the folder content because it s locked and secured.

How To Delete And Restore Recycle Bin From Desktop

Here are some tips on how you can permanently delete Recycle Bin icon from the desktop and how to recover or restore the deleted Recycle Bin icon on your desktop.

Firstly, follow these step by step instructions to delete a Recycle Bin icon from your Windows computer desktop.

Navigate to the following location HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace
Now remember to delete the Recycle Bin you deleted a key {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}. Now we will create it back to get Recycle Bin back on our desktop. After you have navigated on above path, right click on NameSpace, click New and then click Key.
Name the key : {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}
This is it. Close the Registry Editor and you will see the Recycle Bin back on your desktop.

Now these are some basic tweaks to delete and then recover Recycle Bin from your desktop. Windows Vista users have more easy way to delete the Recycle Bin.

FTP site on Windows XP

XP includes a built-in FTP service component that lets FTP clients connect to the machine and read or write files; however, this service doesn't install by default.

To install the FTP service, perform the following steps:

Go to Control Panel and click on Add/Remove Programs
Click Add/Remove Windows Components.
Click on Internet Information Services (IIS), then click Details.
Select the File Transfer Protocol (FTP) Service check box, and OK.
During the installation, you may need to put in your Windows XP CD. If you do this, during the installation, and it pops up a blue Windows Configuration menu, close it, to allow the first Installation process to complete.
Click OK.

Use the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) Internet Information Services program to configure the FTP service:

a) Go to Start | Programs | Administrative Tools | then click Internet Information Services.

b) Expand the computer name

c) Expand FTP Sites

d) A Default FTP Site will have been added. Right-click Default FTP Site

e) Select Properties from the displayed context menu

f) Click “Home Directory” and note the path. This is the place that files must be stored, to be available for FTPing.

g) Click “Security Accounts”, and untick “Allow Anonymous Connections”

h) Click Apply and OK.

Other notes:

Turning off Anonymous Connections mean that to login requires the Login name and Password of the computer.

If this security is not required, or it is a concern to have the Login name and Password in clear text, then leaving Anonymous Connections on means that remote users can login with “Anonymous” and use the email address for a password.

If users need to upload, then the following setting will need to be changed:

a) Go to Start | Programs | Administrative Tools | then click Internet Information Services.

b) Expand the computer name

c) Expand FTP Sites

d) A Default FTP Site will have been added. Right-click Default FTP Site

e) Select Properties from the displayed context menu

f) Click “Home Directory”

g) Tick in the “Write” box.

h) Click OK

In Many cases, it will be necessary to allow FTP through the WindowsXP firewall. To do this, carry out the following:

Open Control Panel, and double click to open Windows Firewall
Click Advanced
In the top box “Network Connection Settings”, with the Network Connection where FTP connections will come into your computer selected, Click Settings.
This box shows the services running on your network that external users can access. Tick the FTP Server box.
OK twice and close Control Panel.

DVD Burner – Actually, most laptops already include this as a standard optical drive. But if you do get a laptop with it, look forsuch extra features built into the DVD burner such as the ability to burn a LightScribe or a Double Layer disc.

Integrated Webcam – YouTube anyone? With an integrated web camera built into the laptop (usually at the top of the screen,) you can make your own videos - and it’s useful for video conferencing with programs such as Skype too!

Card Reader – Also a component usually included these days – if you own a particular camera, look for one that supports your camera's flash memory format

Solid State Drive (SSD) – A very cool, but very expensive, option being offered on more and more laptops. Leave the spinning drive behind for a bank of flash memory chips.

TV card – The name says it all. Get TV right on your laptop. The newest TV cards are usually hybrid cards that can pick up HDTV, Analog TV and also work as a video capture device.

Extra Hard Drives – Some laptops offer a second hard drive as a dumping ground for data or as a scratch disc. This is a very useful place to dump pictures and music. If a second internal drive is not offered, an external hard drive may be for you.

Fingerprint scanner – Goodbye passwords and hello biometrics! Used to be pretty much only seen on business class laptops, but has been infiltrating the consumer laptop market slowly but surely.

Blu-ray – A very cool, but also expensive feature to get. A reader is often abbreviated as a BD-ROM, a writer as a BD-R and a writer/rewriter as BD-RE. If you do opt for a laptop with blu-ray drive – spin that propeller in the beanie cap you’re wearing and welcome to a very exclusive (for the time being) club..

Long-life batteries /second batteries – There’s nothing quite as frustrating as having your batteries run out. It is worthwhile to see if a long life battery is available for the model laptop you’re interested in. If not, consider buying a second battery.

Ultra-High screen resolutions – Particularly useful when your laptop includes a Blu-ray drive.

Cell Phone Modem – Cell phone modems, or similar devices will (for a price, plus a service plan) allow you to be truly free surfing the web where you want, when you want.

Docks and port replicators – Basically, these can give you more ports that you may want.

Wireless (Wi-Fi) Printer – With many people hooking up wireless in their home, getting a printer with Wi-Fi already built in just makes sense.

Office Suites – Contrary to popular belief, most laptops DO NOT include office suites. If you’re looking for a laptop with Microsoft Word already installed, you may be looking long and hard. Some will have trial versions of the software, but you’ll need to purchase it after the trial period. Home/Student editions of the software are usually very well priced and for many people worth buying as an extra.Pre-installed “Bundlewaer” – This is actually a feature that people usually DON’T want on their laptop. Crapware is any software that is preloaded into a laptop that is not normally part of the operating system. While many laptop manufacturers usually do include a utility to uninstall crapware one at a time, for many it would be better if this “extra feature” is not loaded at all. Warranties and extended technical support – Some laptops (like the Lenovo ThinkPad series) already come with a monster warranty up-front. For everyone else, there are extended warranties. Be sure to read the fine print, and find out of it covers accidental damage (like dropping the laptop). An extended service plan will give you longer technical support if needed. But, be forewarned, these warranties/extended service plans do add up quickly.

Google Lively A new virtual world

Google has launched a new 3D virtual world called Google Lively, similar to Linden Labs’ Second Life and Sony’s planned ‘Home’ service for PlayStation 3, in which users create avatars for themselves and interact virtually.

Users can create their own 3D “rooms,” and deck them out with furniture and other accoutrements, in addition to being able to add themed music to complete your personalized virtual space in Google Lively.

Users will be able to visit others’ rooms, leave items for other Google Lively netizens as well as being able to stream photos and video

Google sites, a service previously only available to google apps users, is now open to all.

Google plans to extend this simple hosting and design solution to those wanting to host simple web-pages. Google Sites offers a variety of themes, and arrangements to help create your website. There is also the ability to integrate your Google Calendars, Mail, and Files with ease.

Google Sites are collaborative, which engineering manager Andrew Zaeske said in the announcement makes them ideal for “team projects, company intranets, community groups, classrooms, clubs, family updates, you name it.”

No HTML knowledge is required, and your website will be hosted for free on the Google domain.

10 Useful Google Chrome Tips And Tricks

You have enjoyed Google’s browser experience and speed that Chrome has to offer. It is time to dig more about Chrome and see what you can do to make Chrome more users friendly. Here I am sharing some tips on how you can get a rich user experience while using Google Chrome.

Search from URL bar

Chrome does not have a search bar like Firefox. To perform search in Chrome, simply type search phrase in URL bar and hit Enter. Chrome will perform a Google research for your phrase.

Change omnibox suggestion count

By default Chrome shows 5 URL suggestions when you type a URL.

In Windows right click on Chrome shortcut icon and select properties. In the Target field, add this command line switch to the end of command.
–omnibox-popup-count=your_desirable_suggestions_count

Change Chrome Theme

If you want to change the Chrome default theme to personalize it more, here are easy steps to change Chrome theme

Download a Chrome theme
Extract the default.dll file
Navigate to Chrome installation directory and go to /Application/Chrome/Version/Theme folder. The chrome version will be in the form of 0.2.129.27. Replace the default.dll file in the folder with the default.dll that you extracted.
This will change Chrome theme.

Download Youtube video in Chrome

This tip will allow you to download a youtube video in Chrome without using any additional software or file. In the Chrome press “Ctrl+B” which will load the bookmark bar. Right click on bar and click “Add Page”. In the name bar type Youtube Videos or whatever you want to name it. In the URL field copy and paste following code.

If you have more than one tab, you can drag and drop the tab on menu bar to open it in a new window.

The easter egg appears if you type about:internets in the address bar but this only works in XP and not in Vista.

Unbox Apple iMac 24-inch 2.8GHz

I bought an Apple iMAc 24-inch 2.8GHz desktop computer during the PC Fair 2008 (II) from Machines. I had unboxed the iMac in the night of the day I bought it.

It is HUGE! I didn’t know how to get the iMac out of the box. At the end, I turned the box upside down to get it out. (dangerous movement!)

There are only a few items contained in the iMac box: Apple iMac, Apple slim keyboard, Apple mighty mouse and Apple remote.

There is no Mac OS X beginner guide like Apple iBook box, only a small “Everything Mac” booklet which tells you the features of your iMac and the problem troubleshooting.

Apple isn’t trouble free. I experienced iMac screen “burn”/blackout and system hang problems in just a few days.

It seems the iMac’s heat caused the various problems. I installed a freeware called smcFanControl and everything become all right!

What a surprise! You unbox your brand new Apple iPhone 3G, switch it on but discover that the iPhone wallpaper has a girl smiling at you! Not bikini girl though, but she is cute! She is, the iPhone Girl.

An Apple iPhone 3G owner, markm49uk, published a forum thread on MacRumors.com about the interesting wallpapers inside his brand new iPhone.

Not sure if this is or is not the ‘norm’ but I just received my brand new iPhone here in the UK and once it had been activated on iTunes I found that the home screen (the screen you can personalise with a photo) already had a photo set against it !!!!

Who is the young cute girl? It has been confirmed that the girl is a production line worker of FoxConn company (Apple iPhone manufacturer). It is believed that the girl was testing iPhone camera but forgot to delete the test photos.

Back from PIKOM PC Fair 2008 (II) (KLCC)

I am back from PIKOM PC Fair 2008 (II) held in KL. It was so crowded and I almost regretted goingthere… I only completed half of my PC Fair shopping list.

These are what I got: Apple iMac 24" 2.8GHz, WD My Book Studio (500GB) external hard drive, SONY DCR-SR65 40GB Handycam Camcorder. I missed the NAS, netbook, and webcam.

P1 W1Max Wimax speed test

One of the major attraction about PC Fair 2008 (II) is the P1 W1MAX wimax service. I tried the wimax connection at PC Fair, the Internet speed is quite impressive. Web pages loaded fast, no load waiting for YouTube videos.

The following is the screenshot of speed test result for P1 W1MAX:

It shows 2.66Mbps download speed and 536Kbps upload speed for P1 W1MAX wimax connection. That’s much faster than normal Streamyx broadband connection, although the upload speed is capped at 512K.

I normally don’t write about gadgets on this blog unless I find something really useful. Today I ran across a USB flash drive that create automatic online backups of any file copied to the drive! I usually backup important files on my computer to a USB flash drive because I feel that it’s going to be safe.

But now you can be even safer because the Titanium Plus USB flash drive from SanDisk makes data loss virtually impossible! The new drive offers automatic and seamless online backup option with device password protection and hardware AES encryption so you can easily access your files on the device or online.

If your device is stolen or lost, the password security and encryption will prevent anyone from being able to access and view your files.

This nifty little USB drive also has some other cool features in it that make it way better than a normal USB drive. It is not intended to provide an online revenue model for established news organizations. Heck, they've got business managers. They shouldn't need a wiki to show them what to do.

Content websites typically earn money through one of four ways:

Commissions / Affiliate links
Advertising networks
Selling your own ads
Paid content
Sponsorships/Grants

Once you have ads on your site, you will want to compute the eCPM (effective cost per thousand impressions) of revenue that each ad type is earning for you. You calculate eCPM by taking the total amount generated by an ad (or ad type), diving it by the number of pages on which that ad (or ad type) appears, then multiplying by 1,000. Let eCPM data help you decide which advertising type, layout and position work best for you.

Commissions / Affiliate links

Affiliate programs, such as Amazon.com's Associates Program, provided the first ways for early solo and small Web publishers to make a few bucks on their websites. In these programs, an online retailer will pay you, the publisher, a percentage on sales made after customers click through from your website to the retailer's site. Links can include traditional banner ads, search forms and links to individual products.

Because you only earn money when sales are made, affiliate programs will work best for you if your site's readers are consistently looking to make high-priced purchases -- for example, if you run a product review site. If you're interested in affiliate program, browse through merchant directories like Commission Junction and LinkShare to find retailers that offer products that fit your site's topic and audience.

Once registered with a merchant's program, you can create an ad or product link on your site using a snippet of Web code downloaded from the retailer. Some merchants go further and allow you to create virtual storefronts that match the design of your site, but where the retailer still handles all the inventory and commerce. Be careful setting up such arrangements -- unless you want customers coming to you for return and refund questions instead of to the retailer.

You'll want to note what percentage of a sale the retailer pays back to you, as well as the length of time after a sale that you get credit for the purchase. Some retailers limit credit to sales made on the initial click-through, but others will give credit for any sales made within a day or so. Also, some retailers will pay a commission on purchases you personally make after clicking your own links; others may kick you out of the program for doing that. Check a retailer's affiliate agreement and shop around for what you consider the best deal before putting links on your site.

Many publishers have found that links to individual products return more commissions than banner ads going to a retailer's home page. But the additional money those links earn might not be enough to justify the extra time that selecting and maintaining them requires.

Advertising networks

Most news websites earn the bulk of their money through advertising. But you don't need a sales staff to attract advertisers to your site. Ad networks can handle the sale and display of ads on your site. All you need do is drop a few lines of code into your Web pages where you want the ads to appear.

The most popular ad network for independent publishers is Google's AdSense program. AdSense is a "pay per click" (PPC) program, where you earn money each time one of your readers clicks on a Google-served ad. Since you earn money on clicks, rather than completed sales, PPC ad networks can provide a more reliable source of income for sites whose readers are not looking to make a purchase right away. Other notable PPC ad networks include the Yahoo! Publisher Network and Ad Voyager.

Most PPC ads are text, but some PPC networks also sell image and Flash ads. Ads are sold and displayed based on an auction system, where advertisers bid on selected keywords and phrases that appear on network websites. The ad network looks for webpages displaying its ad code, then matches what it determines the content of a webpage to be with the most appropriate keywords and phrases that advertisers have bid upon. The network then automatically weighs several factors in determining which ads to serve on the page, including the value of those bids; advertisers' remaining budgets for those bids; what percentage of readers have clicked on those ads in the past; and, in Google's case, the percentage of those readers who have made a purchase or read a designated number of pages on the advertiser's site.

Google's "Smart Pricing" program will adjust the amount paid to you for each click based on your readers' track record of making a purchase, or viewing a certain number of pages, on that particular advertiser's website. So if your site attracts motivated buyers, you remain in the best position to earn money.

Whatever you do, do not even think about clicking the ads on your site, or encouraging your readers to do the same. All PPC ad networks prohibit click fraud, and will boot from their program any publisher found to be inflating their number of clicks. Even well-intentioned discussion board participants can get a publisher booted from the program by encouraging other readers to click the ads to support the site. Google, for example, has suggested publishers concerned about their readers' conduct add this disclaimer to their site:

"Your postings to this site may not include incentives of any kind for other users to click on ads which are displayed on the site. This includes encouraging other readers to click on the ads or to visit the advertisers' sites, as well as drawing any undue attention to the ads. This activity is strictly prohibited in order to avoid potential inflation of advertiser costs."

If you don't think PPC ad networks will work for you because your site's target audience is defined by demographics, such as geography or a religious or political affiliation -- don't worry. Traditional ad networks such as BlogAds provide an alternative to the PPC networks. BlogAds sells its ads on a more traditional site-targeted model. Advertisers do not bid on keywords or phrases, but instead pay for their ads to be displayed a certain number of times on selected websites or groups of websites. BlogAds has become especially popular on political blogs, where advertisers can buy across a group of liberal or conservative weblogs.

Design to maximize online ad revenue

Since PPC ad networks target their ads primarily by topic, rather than geography or demographics, that makes these networks work better with niche topic websites than with sites that target their readers by geography or other demographics, such as gender, education, income or political affiliation.

For the system to work well for you, the PPC network's spiders must be able to determine a topic for each of your webpages and then must match keywords or phrases that advertisers have bid upon. That means the advantage goes to websites where each page covers a distinct and easily identifiable subject. So if you have a blog that covers a mishmash of topics on a single URL, you won't elicit the targeted ads that lead to high-paying clicks.

If you want to use PPC ad networks, organize your content to limit individual URLs to a specific topic. Break long blogs into individual entries. Archive old posts and stories by subject matter, not just by date and author. Stay active on discussion boards, keeping threads on topic and directing folks to more relevant pages should they stray toward other subjects. Use keywords in headlines, decks and URLs whenever possible. And spell out keywords, phrases and proper names on first reference, rather than using acronyms throughout the piece. (See, old fashioned copy editing rules *can* help you make money!)

Well-organized pages on individual topics also show up better in search engine results, attracting Web surfers curious about a specific keyword, who are more likely to click on a targeted ad. Publishers who create evergreen articles that are likely to attract a high number of links and clicks over time will do best in attracting search engine traffic to their ad-supported webpages. If you publish time-sensitive articles, which are not likely to have a long-enough shelf life to attract significant search engine traffic, consider swapping out or archiving articles on the same topic to a single URL, so that URL can get linked to and picked up in search results.

Where you place ads on a page affects how many of your users see them, and click. According to recent Google research, top performing ad formats include:

Large box ads placed in the middle of your main content column;
Skyscraper ads placed in a left-side column;
Leaderboard ads placed at the top and the bottom of the main content column.

Customize the ads' colors to match the background, type and navigational colors of your site, too, to eliminate "banner blindness" and maximize their visibility to your readers.

Then keep an eye on your ads to make sure that they remain relevant to your site. To a reader, ads -- like anything else on your pages -- are part of the content of your website. If an ad network fails to deliver consistently relevant ads, dump it and try something else. Respect your readers by not bombarding them with irrelevant advertising and they will respect you by continuing to read your site.

Think twice before installing pop-up, pop-under and screen "take-over" ads, too. Many readers steer clear of sites that block their access to the content they're looking for with aggressive advertising. Keep your website a safe haven for these ad-weary readers and you can build its audience over time.

How much traffic do you need?

With advertising, the more readers you have and page views you serve, the more money you can make. But how much traffic do you need to make a living from your website?

To make $36,500 a year, you'd need to earn $100 a day on your site (plus whatever expenses you incur). Let's assume your site is attractive to advertisers and earns $10 in ad revenue for every thousand page views. That would mean you'd need to serve 10,000 page views a day to meet this target. (And more if your site earns less than $10 per thousand page views.)

How can you attract that much traffic? If you are writing one article a day on subjects that will be out of date within 24 hours, it's going to be tough. You'll need to attract nearly 10,000 views each day for that's day article, since few people will bother reading your old, out-of-date work. If you write a fair number of "evergreen" features, which keep attracting page views long after they are written, you'll find the task much easier. If your site naturally deals with "perishable" news content, at least publish each day's new news to the same URL, overwriting or pushing down the old content, so that URL can build the in-bound links and search engine traffic that will help you attract new readers you need each day.

Reader-contributed content can also help you meet your page view goals. Well-managed, thoughtfully organized discussion boards and wikis can add dozens of new content pages a day to your site, with much less effort on your part than writing that many original articles.

Selling your own ads

If you don't want to share your ad revenue with a network, or if your site isn't the type to do well with PPC ads, you might consider selling space directly to advertisers.

First, you will need solid information about your site's visitors. Ultimately, what you are selling to advertisers is access to your readers, so you'd better know how many, and who, they are. A traffic tracking service like Google Analytics can provide accurate trafiic data that filters out hon-human traffic like search engine spiders and automated robots (which can account for up to 90 percent of a site's overall traffic). Make Money also provides reader tracking, along with some crude demographic information about your site's readers.

You should also consider conducting a survey of your readers, to get more detailed information about their demographics and behavior. SurveyMonkey provides easy-to-use tools to set up such surveys.

Once you have advertisers, you will need a system to serve and manage ads, such as OpenAds, as well as system to invoice your advertisers, such as Blinksale or PayPal. (PayPal's invoicing system does not require your advertisers to have a PayPal account, just a credit card.)

Set up a page on your site, linked from the header or footer, that provides data about your site's traffic and visitors, as well as a list of available ad packages. You might also provide a well-designed PDF version of the same data, as decision-makers often prefer "hard copy" versions of this information. (If you need free software to convert Word documents to PDFs, OpenOffice does this with a single mouse click.)

If your advertising page does not generate enough leads to support your site, you'll need to make cold calls to potential advertisers, via e-mail, phone or in person. You'll have the best luck with smaller businesses that do not place ads through agencies, but where the owner makes his or her own ad decisions.

Paid content

Given the variety and depth of information available on the Web, you have to provide truly unique content of high value to specific readers to get those readers to pay for it. The fact that a paid journalist wrote an article for you does not mean it's worth paying for to a reader. Detail-oriented publications such as Consumer Reports and Cook's Illustrated have had success selling the results of their independent testing online. And, of course, porn sites have been earning big bucks from paid content since the Web's earliest days. But general-interest publications, such as the Los Angeles Times, have found that walling off content to paid subscribers has generated less revenue than the company could have earned by selling advertising on freely available pages.

If you are certain that your content is unique and valuable enough that readers would be willing to pay for it, you'll need to select a way to handle payments from your readers. The system could be as easy as asking readers mail you a check in exchange for your putting them on e-mail content distribution list -- a method which offers the advantage of not requiring any advanced Web server security set-up. Or you could restrict access to certain folders on your website to readers whom you assign log-ins after they buy a subscription. Such restrictions are relatively easy to set up on Apache webservers. Payment can be handled manually via postal mail or phone, or automatically through an e-commerce storefront. (Many Web hosting packages include e-commerce storefronts.)

Notice that ways to make money with a website are different from ways to make more money from it. Methods to increase your traffic or click-through rate will help you make more money, but they do not represent a method of making money per se.

For example, one could suggest that blending AdSense ads with the content is a way to make money from a website. In reality it’s not; it’s just a way to make more money by improving your ad click-through rate. The real monetization method behind it is a PPC ad network.

The list is divided into direct and indirect methods, and examples and links are provided for each point. Enjoy!

Direct Methods

1. PPC Advertising Networks

Google AdSense is the most popular option under this category, but there are also others. Basically you need to sign up with the network and paste some code snippets on your website. The network will then serve contextual ads (either text or images) relevant to your website, and you will earn a certain amount of money for every click.

The profitability of PPC advertising depends on the general traffic levels of the website and, most importantly, on the click-through rate (CTR) and cost per click (CPC). The CTR depends on the design of the website. Ads placed abode the fold or blended with content, for instance, tend to get higher CTRs. The CPC, on the other hand, depends on the nice of the website. Mortgages, financial products and college education are examples of profitable niches (clicks worth a couple of dollars are not rare), while tech-related topics tend to receive a smaller CPC (sometimes as low as a couple of cents per click).

The source of the traffic can also affect the overall CTR rate. Organic traffic (the one that comes from search engines) tends to perform well because these visitors were already looking for something, and they tend to click on ads more often. Social media traffic, on the other hand, presents terribly low CTRs because these visitors are tech-savvy and they just ignore ads.

2. CPM Advertising Networks

CPM advertising networks behave pretty much as PPC networks, except that you get paid according to the number of impressions (i.e., page views) that the ads displayed on your site will generate. CPM stands for Cost per Mille, and it refers to the cost for 1,000 impressions.

A blog that generates 100,000 page views monthly displaying an advertising banner with a $1 CPM, therefore, will earn $100 monthly.

CPM rates vary with the network, the position of the ad and the format. The better the network, the higher the CPM rate (because they have access to more advertisers). The closer you put the ad to the top of the page, the higher the CPM. The bigger the format (in terms of pixels), the higher the CPM.

You can get as low as $0,10 and as high as $10 per 1,000 impressions (more in some special cases). CPM advertising tends to work well on websites with a high page views per visitor ratio (e.g., online forums, magazines and so on).

3. Direct Banner Advertising

Selling your own advertising space is one of the most lucrative monetization methods. First and foremost because it enables you to cut out the middleman commissions and to determine your own rates. The most popular banner formats on the web are the 728×90 leaderboard, the 120×600 skyscraper, the 300×250 rectangle and the 125×125 button.

The downside of direct banner advertising is that you need to have a big audience to get qualified advertisers, and you will need to spend time managing the sales process, the banners and the payments.

4. Text Link Ads

After Google declared that sites selling text links without the nofollow tag would be penalized, this monetization method became less popular.

Many website owners are still using text links to monetize their sites, though, some using the nofollow tag and some not.

Joining one of these sponsored reviews marketplaces will give you the opportunity to write sponsored posts on a wide range of topics. Not all bloggers are willing to get paid to write about a specific product or website (because it might compromise the editorial credibility), but the ones who do are making good money out of it.

If your blog has a big audience you could also offer sponsored reviews directly, cutting off the commissions of the middleman.

8. RSS Feed Ads

While the Internet is populated with free forums, there is also the possibility to create a private one where members need to pay a single or recurring fee to join.

Depending on your niche, a market place that allows your visitors to buy, sell and trade products could work well. Over the time you could start charging a small fee for new product listings.

The problem with this method is that there are no standard software on the web, so you would need to hire a coder to get a marketplace integrated into your website.

You can see an example of a marketplaces being used on EasyWordpress and on Mashable.

14. Paid Surveys and Polls

There are services that will pay you money to run a small survey or poll on your website. The most popular one is called Vizu Answers.

Basically you need to sign up with them, and select the kind of polls that you want to run your site. Most of these services operate under a CPM model.

15. Selling or Renting Internal Pages

Million Dollar Wiki made this concept popular, but it was being used on the web for a long time around (check Pagerank10.co.uk for instance).

These websites sell for a single fee or rent for a recurring fee internal pages on their domain. Usually they have either high Pagerak or high traffic, so that people purchasing a page will be able to benefit in some way.

Implementing this method on a small blog would be difficult, but the concept is interesting and could be explored further.

16. Highlighted Posts from Sponsors

Techmeme probably pioneered this idea, but somehow it has not spread to other websites. The tech news aggregator displays editorial posts on the left column, and on the sidebar they have a section titled “Techmeme Sponsor Posts.”

On that section posts from the blog of the advertisers get highlighted, sending qualified traffic their way. Considering that the monthly cost for one spot is $5000 and that they have around 6 sponsors at any given time, it must be working well.

17. Donations

Placing a “Donate” link or button on a website can be an efficient way to earn money, especially if your blog is on a niche where readers learn and gain value from your content.

Personal development and productivity blogs, for instance, tend to perform well with donation based systems (one good example being Steve Pavlina).

A small variation of this method appeared sometime ago with the Buy Me a Beer plugin. This WordPress plugin enables you to insert a customized message at the bottom of each article, asking the readers to chip in for a beer or coffee.

18. In-text Adverting

In-text adverting networks like Kontera and Vibrant Media will place sponsored links inside your text. These links come with a double underline to differentiate them from normal links, and once the user rolls the mouse over the link the advertising will pop. Should the user click on it the site owner will make some money.

Some people make good money with this method, but others refrain from using it due to its intrusiveness. It is also interesting to note that very few mainstream websites have experimented with in-text advertising.

19. Pop-ups and Pop-unders

Pop-ups are a common yet annoying form of advertising on the Internet. If you are just trying to make a much money as possible from your website, you could experiment with them.

If you are trying to grow the traffic and generate loyal visitors, however, you probably should stay away from them. Just consider the hundreds of pop-up blockers out there: there is a reason why they are so popular.

20. Audio Ads

Also called PPP (Pay Per Play), this advertising method was introduce by Net Audio Ads. the concept is pretty simple: play a small audio advertising (usually 5 seconds) every time a visitor enters into your website. The user should not be able to stop it, creating a 100% conversion rate based on unique visitors.

The company is still rolling tests, but some users are reporting to get from a $4 to a $6 CPM. Regardless of the pay rate, though, this is a very intrusive form of advertising, so think twice before using it.

21. Selling the Website

Selling your website could be your last resource, but it has the potential to generate a big sum of money in a short period of time.

Market places on online forums like DigitalPoint and Sitepoint are always active with website buyers and sellers. Keep in mind that they most used parameter to determine the value of a website is the monthly revenue that it generates, multiplied by a certain number (the multiplier can be anything from 5 to 30, depending on the expectations of the seller, on the quality of the site, on the niche and other factors).

Some people also make money trading and flipping websites. They either create them from scratch or buy existing ones, and after some revamping they sell them for a profit.

If your website takes off and becomes an authority on its niche, you could create a conference around it. Depending on the size of your audience, the event could attract thousands of people, and you could make money directly from conference passes and sponsors.

Search Engine Land, for instance, created a series of conferences that visit several cities on the United States and on other countries as well. The conferences are called Search Marketing Expo, and the tickets and passes cost thousands of dollars.

Spyware is computer software that is installed surreptitiously on a personal computer to intercept or take partial control over the user’s interaction with the computer, without the user’s informed consent.

In response to the emergence of spyware, a small industry has sprung up dealing in anti-spyware software. Running anti-spyware software has become a widely recognized element of computer security best practices for Microsoft Windows desktop computers. A number of jurisdictions have passed anti-spyware laws, which usually target any software that is surreptitiously installed to control a user’s computer.
